Email Spam Filtering: shared email
Brinkster provides Business Premium Email for custom domain names. The email mail environment offers Cloudmark Premium spam, virus and malware filtering which is configured at the system / global level; we do not provide end user account or domain level filtration. The filter is currently set to the most appropriate level to avoid false positives, while also catching the most amount of spam mail possible. These same filters are applied to both inbound and outbound email, meaning, all mail that you receive as well as send is checked for unwanted spam activity.

Historically, the Brinkster mail filter catches 90+ % of the email that comes in and out of our mail system; this is email that you don't ever see. Don't worry, we are 100% sure that these message are spam / unwanted messages. What about the other 10% of Junk mail and why does it still reach your mailbox? These are messages that we are pretty sure are spam, but we are simply unable to be 100% positive; we don't want to prevent these messages from reaching your mailbox. A large portion of the junk mail that arrives to your mailbox is placed in the 'Junk' directory inside your email account. You can review these messages by logging into your account through webmail or synchronizing the directory through IMAP.

Training the Mail Filter
Brinkster's email system also operates bayesian filtering technology. This means that the filter is self contained and learns from everyone's input. Everyone has the opportunity to assist in training the email spam filter- yes your vote does count. While you are logged into your account in webmail (
https://webmail.brinkster.com/) select one or more messages that you deem as spam email or junk mail and click on the 'junk' button. This action sends a copy of the spam message to our filter's learning engine so that it may be introduced to the learning engine. Do this action enough times to the same or similar messages and the filter will learn what you think should be considered spam.

*Remember that Brinkster has thousands of accounts that all get to vote, so if you've voted for the same message once already, it may take a few more votes to be considered spammy enough to be captured.

Third Party Filtering
Unfortunately, Brinkster is not able to provide options to opt in or opt out of the global mail filtering and there is no ability to increase or decrease the level of filtering for your specific account. While we would like to claim we can catch all the spam mail that you are sent, tuning the filtering much higher would create false positive captures of legitimate email. We don't want to end up filtering out that important message of yours.

Your organization may want to investigate third party email filter solutions and choose the one that fits you best. Generally, these solutions are subscription based with a yearly subscription fee of $30 + USD for each installation or computer.

Many filtering software products have the ability to run directly from your local computer (that you own and operate) which is connected to the internet. They sample your incoming email and check it against their own filtering list. These lists are maintained by the organization you subscribe to and access is limited to licensed subscribers. These solutions must be installed only your computer and cannot run directly from Brinkster's email system.
