PRESS RELEASE
Brinkster Upgrades DNS with Nominum
By Anastasia Tubanos, theWHIR.com
September 20, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Network naming and addressing solutions provider Nominum (nominum.com) announced on Wednesday that Web hosting provider Brinkster (brinkster.com) has selected its Foundation authoritative name server to enhance its existing DNS operations.
Nominum says its ANS technology provides a dedicated DNS authoritative name server with higher performance than generic or open-source DNS systems. It scales to millions of names, millions of zones, and can be configured and managed remotely without downtime. ANS is used by customers running DNS registries, registrars and hosting providers with strict service-level obligations, as well as organizations with critical dependence on network naming resources.
Nominum's VP of marketing Albert Gouyet says its ANS product benefits companies like Brinkster because not only does the end user have a better experience, but the company's network runs smoother.
"A lot of people care about how reliable the database is, how fast it is and what you can do with it and this is no different from the area we cover," says Gouyet. "So when you or somebody like Brinkster deploys this, you get something that is much more robust and much easier to integrate, and something that you don't have to shut down every time you need to reconfigure it or add data to it. It is really designed for an environment that is always on."
Brinkster's CTO Nathaniel Kemberling says the upgrade of Brinkster's existing authoritative DNS servers with Nominum's carrier grade ANS servers has enabled real-time activation updates for customers, eliminated downtime and ultimately enabled Brinkster to provide a higher level of service while remaining competitive in price.
"DNS is one of the core parts of the network. There's been a couple of large incidents out there where even Google has gone down because of DNS and it's the kind of thing, when you have DNS trouble, literally, it can make it so that no one can get to you," says Kemberling. "We really wanted to have a phenomenal product and to me, Nominum fit that solution. On your network, whether you have Bind or Microsoft DNS, when you have large amounts of domain name records on your servers, it can take a long time for the servers to start up. But with a product like Nomunim's ANS, it literally starts within seconds and is fully available to the entire Internet immediately. That was one of the main reasons we chose to go with this product, its scalability, the amount of domains you can put on it and how well it handles those large quantity of domains."
Gouyet says ANS Server is also easy to customize and deploy.
"Everybody requires some customization, especially in these environments," he says. "That's not true for all of our products, but for somebody like Brinkster, or somebody who offers hosting, ANS is always a part of their overall solution and needs to be integrated. We provide a complete set of APIs, where you have complete access to the server so you can re-configure and completely change data, online and in real time. It's pretty likely that everybody is going to have a unique type of environment, so our focus is really making it easy for companies to integrate us."
